Hearst, Apple, Amazon and other top tech companies donate to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts

The Hearst Corporation is offering an employee match program for donations to the Red Cross, one of many such programs being instituted in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and the unprecedented amount of rainfall on Texas and Louisiana (see announcement below).

PepsiCo is providing more than $1 million in cash and products to the Red Cross, as will Walmart that is also contributing a portion of that to Convoy of Hope.

Amazon and Whole Foods will match up to $1 million in donations made via its website (though, to be honest, it could do a far better job of promoting this).

Apple has donated $2 million and is promoting donations through iTunes, while Google has donated $250,000 and has an employee match program up to the same level.

Here is the announcement to staff from Hearst management:

Dear Colleagues,

As we all watch the devastation being visited on the Gulf Coast and in particular Houston, home to our largest newspaper and more than 800 Hearst colleagues, I want to let you know that our colleagues and their families are safe and unharmed. Some have suffered flood damage to their homes and the disruption of vital services, and our local management is working with us to help meet their needs.

Our prayers are with the families of those who have lost loved ones, and our thoughts and efforts are with those who continue to provide vital rescue and aid efforts, work that will no doubt go on for months. Hearst is donating $1 million to the Greater Houston Red Cross. Hearst also will match your donations, dollar for dollar, up to an additional $1 million to the Red Cross’s efforts across the Gulf region.

The American Red Cross is helping people affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and across the Gulf Coast. Shelters are open, truckloads of supplies are being distributed and volunteers are in place. To donate, visit or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.

All Hearst full-time employees may take advantage of the employee match by sending your Red Cross donation receipt to Jules Mager by September 30, 2017. (Her contact information is: or Hearst, 16th Floor, 300 W. 57th St., New York, NY 10019.)

All best regards,

Steven R. Swartz
President & CEO
