Michael Scherer joins The Washington Post as a national political reporter

Scherer has been TIME Magazine’s Washington Bureau Chief since 2013, having joined in December 2007 as a campaign reporter covering Republicans during the 2008 election

We are thrilled to announce that Michael Scherer is joining The Post as a national political reporter.

Michael SchererMichael is an extremely accomplished political reporter and writer who has mastered every story form, from quick digital analyses to memorable cover-story features. His mission will be as broad as his considerable talents: He will write authoritative enterprise and profiles; continue to report on the Trump administration and how the president is changing Washington; and play a leading role in our coverage of the 2018 midterms and 2020 presidential election.

Michael has been TIME’s Washington Bureau Chief since 2013, overseeing political coverage in the magazine and online. He joined TIME in December 2007 as a campaign reporter covering Republicans during the 2008 election. He was named White House correspondent in January 2009, and traveled to more than a dozen countries with President Obama. He won the National Press Club’s Lee Walczak Award for Political Excellence for his articles on the 2012 Obama reelection effort, and the 2014 New York Press Club Award for Political Coverage for a cover story on the 2013 government shutdown. He served on the board of the White House Correspondents’ Association from 2010 to 2013. He is the author of more than 20 TIME cover stories, including Person of the Year in 2012 and 2016.

Before joining TIME, Michael was the Washington correspondent for Salon.com. He previously worked as the Washington correspondent for Mother Jones, and as an assistant editor at the Columbia Journalism Review. He began his career as a reporter for the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, Mass. Michael is a graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the University of California at Santa Cruz. He is on Twitter @MichaelScherer.
