Local ownership acquires three free Quebec weekly newspapers from Transcontinental Inc.

Two TC Media employees and a businessman have formed Trium Médias Inc. which have acquired L’Étoile du Lac, Le Lac-St-Jean and Le Nouvelles Hebdo

The Canadian printer and media company Transcontinental has been selling media assets of late, including its Atlantic properties to The Halifax Herald Ltd, and announced earlier this year that it would sell its Ontario and Quebec media properties soon.

“We are convinced that selling these assets to local players is the best course of action in order to contribute to the continued sustainability of local media and to foster greater connections with the advertisers and communities they serve,” said François Olivier, President and Chief Executive Officer of TC Transcontinental in April.

Today, the company announced that it had sold three of its publications,  L’Étoile du Lac, based in Roberval, Le Lac-St-Jean, in Alma, and Le Nouvelles Hebdo, in Dolbeau-Mistassini, to a newly formed firm Trium Médias Inc.

The new company consists of two TC Media employees, Marlène Claveau, sales manager,  and Stéphanie Gagnon,Chief Sales Coordinator, as well as local businessman Daniel St-Pierre.

(Google Translate): “Market trends have ensured that over the years, the weeklies of Lac-Saint-Jean have become an outside property of the region. We reverse the current by bringing these three flags of information into the hands of local interests, thus ensuring a 100% regional property. We will be able to bring back to our pages a journalistic coverage that will be more closely related to the major issues of our communities and our respective circles. Our newspapers will again become a privileged channel for our advertisers who want to enjoy a wide visibility on the territory. Our presence in the community will be more evident, “said the three co-owners.

The three free weekly newspapers have a combined circulation of about 51,200.
