Telegraph Media acquires East Bay Express

The publisher of Oakland and Alameda magazines and The East Bay Monthly, Telegraph Media, has acquired the East Bay Express. Owned by former Express editor Stephen Buel and Judith M. Gallman, the married couple are long time Oakland residents.

“I can’t imagine that anyone in the East Bay has more appreciation than Judy and I for the important role the Express plays in the local media landscape,” Buel said. “Our goal in adding the paper to our company is to strengthen that position.”

The new owners previously had owned a minority stake in the East Bay Express. Former majority owner, Jay Youngdahl, will continue to contribute his occasional column, the new owners said.

Former Express co-editor Kathleen Richards, who has been managing editor of The Stranger in Seattle, will be returning to the paper in August as editor-in-chief.

With the sale, Telegraph Media will relocate its headquarters to the Express’ offices in the Oakland’s Jack London district.
