Apple introduces Demographic Metrics in News Publisher, adds two standard ad format sizes

Apple today reached out to Apple News publishers to inform them of a number of important changes to the mobile news app, including the introduction of Apple News Format Demographic Metrics inside News Publisher Analytics’

You will find an explanation of the demographics inside the Apple News help section, which is located in the top right hand corner of the introduction screen when you sign into iCloud.

The demographics include the percentages of male and female users who viewed articles from the channel in News, and the percentages of male and female users who viewed articles from the channel in News, split by age group.

I have my serious doubts about this information I have seen so far, as it looks to tend older that one would imagine for a mobile news app, but I will certainly be keep looking at this on a regular basis.

There are some other changes, as well, the biggest one might be the Third-Party Ad Tags, though I will have to learn more about these. The two ad formats added to Apple News are very much standard: 300×250 (medium rectangle) and 728×90 (leaderboard).

Monetization remains the biggest obstacle to Apple News being a success for publishers, so any changes to the News Publisher is appreciated.

For TNM, traffic is very much hit and miss, though I suppose that is to be expected from a B2B website. But just yesterday traffic for TNM was more than double than the web thanks to a story Apple promoted about the Georgia special election. Other days this week, have found traffic to be less than 10 percent what the regular website draws.

Here is the email sent out today by Apple to Apple News publishers:

Dear Publisher,

We are pleased to announce Apple News Format Demographic Metrics in News Publisher Analytics. We also have some advertising updates and new tips and tricks to share.

Tips and Tricks

Video in Feed
When an article’s video is essential to telling the story, give users the ability to start playback in the feed by providing a metadata.videoURL property in your article.json.

The videoURL property must use the same URL as the video component within the article. For the best experience, ensure that the article’s thumbnailURL matches the video component’s stillURL. Example JSON:

“metadata: {
“videoURL”: “h‌t‌t‌p‌s‌:‌/‌/‌t‌u‌n‌g‌s‌t‌e‌n‌.‌a‌a‌p‌l‌i‌m‌g‌.‌c‌o‌m‌/‌V‌O‌D‌/‌b‌i‌p‌b‌o‌p‌_‌a‌d‌v‌_‌f‌m‌p‌4‌_‌e‌x‌a‌m‌p‌l‌e‌/‌m‌a‌s‌t‌e‌r‌.‌m‌3‌u‌8”,
“thumbnailURL”: “b‌u‌n‌d‌l‌e‌:‌/‌/‌v‌i‌d‌e‌o‌-‌p‌o‌s‌t‌e‌r‌.‌j‌p‌g”
“components”: [
“role”: “video”,
“URL”: “h‌t‌t‌p‌s‌:‌/‌/‌t‌u‌n‌g‌s‌t‌e‌n‌.‌a‌a‌p‌l‌i‌m‌g‌.‌c‌o‌m‌/‌V‌O‌D‌/‌b‌i‌p‌b‌o‌p‌_‌a‌d‌v‌_‌f‌m‌p‌4‌_‌e‌x‌a‌m‌p‌l‌e‌/‌m‌a‌s‌t‌e‌r‌.‌m‌3‌u‌8”,
