New York, NY – May 18, 2017 – Today, The Daily Beast announced the appointment of Heather Dietrick as President and Publisher, where she will oversee all company operations with an emphasis on growing The Daily Beast’s journalistic influence and building out new revenue streams. Ms. Dietrick starts June 14 and will report to IAC Publishing CEO Adam Roston.
“The Daily Beast is in the strongest position it’s ever been, both when it comes to business growth and the caliber of stories we consistently break,” said Adam Roston, CEO of IAC Publishing, which operates The Daily Beast. “Heather is a standout executive with a track record of running profitable media businesses and a passion for independent journalism. Her sense of mission combined with her expertise in building bold media brands with diverse revenue will be critical in helping The Daily Beast realize its full potential.”
As President and Publisher of The Daily Beast, Ms. Dietrick will embolden its mission and commitment as a journalism company while aiming to grow and diversify revenue. Ms. Dietrick comes to The Daily Beast from Gizmodo Media Group where she oversaw influential content brands such as Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Jezebel and Jalopnik, whose traffic collectively grew 25 percent during her tenure. Before this, Ms. Dietrick served as President of Gawker Media, leading the company through its ultimate sale to Univision last year.
“The time is now for The Daily Beast,” said Heather Dietrick. “Millions of people rely on it to cut through the noise and deliver the truth. Given today’s political climate, this has never been more critical or, for me, inspiring. People are hungry for The Beast’s unique brand of edgy, original reporting and there’s an enormous opportunity to accelerate growth thanks to its quality journalism and fiercely loyal audience.”
As one of the first digitally-native news publishers, The Daily Beast has grown more than 10 percent every year since its inception in 2008 and doubled its readership since the 2012 Presidential campaign. The Daily Beast has a large and expanding loyal audience with a significant portion of traffic coming to its homepage; homepage traffic is up 20 percent year over year as more and more readers come directly to The Beast to understand what’s happening in the world.
“Heather fits The Beast ethos perfectly,” said John Avlon, The Daily Beast’s Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director. “She is driven by our mission and dedicated to building a sustainable model to fuel independent journalism. She is whip smart and savvy while being empathetic to both sides of the aisle in a news organization. She’s got a great personal and professional reputation and I’m thrilled to partner with her in this next step of The Beast’s evolution.”
