Hannah Karp named News Director at Billboard

Karp has been with The Wall Street Journal since 2004, covering music, national news, sports, travel and consumer products

New York, NY – April 25, 2017 — Hannah Karp has been named News Director at Billboard, the world’s largest voice in music. In her new role, Karp will work closely with Mike Bruno, Billboard’s SVP of Content, to head up Billboard’s agenda-setting, industry-leading coverage of all things music.

Karp, previously a reporter for The Wall Street Journal where she covered music, national news, sports, travel and consumer products, will play a central role in assembling the “Topline” news section of Billboard magazine, as well as breaking news across Billboard’s digital platforms. Karp will also guide the curation of Billboard’s signature power lists and will set the agenda for Billboard’s daily coverage of the music business.

“Hannah is one of the world’s elite music reporters, with extensive experience covering the music industry and a proven track record of breaking news in the space,” said Mike Bruno, SVP, Content at Billboard. “Her skills and experience will be key for Billboard as we continue to fulfill our role as the music industry’s publication of record, providing real-time news coverage and analysis to our growing, loyal audience.”

Karp’s addition comes on the heels of a major spate of growth at The Hollywood ReporterBillboard Media Group, including the company’s game-changing acquisition of SpinMedia’s music media assets, storied brands Spin, Vibe and Stereogum.

Expanding The Hollywood ReporterBillboard Media Group’s online audience to 45 million readers a month, the deal has significantly strengthened the company’s reach among wired-in millennial audiences who consume music digitally and prioritize the value of live music experiences like Billboard’s record-breaking Billboard Touring Awards and Hot 100 Festival.

Over the course of her career, Karp has worked in bureaus from Brussels to Sao Paulo reporting on the financial markets for Dow Jones Newswires. In 2011, Karp won the Newswoman’s Club’s Front Page Award for her sports coverage. A native of Berkeley, California, Karp holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Duke University and a master’s degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
