Media app updates: Adobe adds HDR to Lightroom Mobile

Other updates include Google updates app for Google Play Newsstand and Google Translate; updates for CNN and ESPN; three eBook apps – Kobo, Scribd and Tapas

There were a number of interesting app updates to media apps, or used by media professionals. Maybe the most important being the update to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

Both the iPhone and iPad apps, as well as the Android app have been updated.

What’s New in Version 2.7.0

  • Authentic HDR on Lightroom Mobile
  • Export original raw images to your camera roll
  • Improved rating of your images
  • Significant improvements to synchronization with the cloud
  • Bug fixes and speed improvements

I test the app out today and I really do think this is a significant improvement for the app.

“The new HDR mode works by automatically scanning the scene to determine the correct exposure range and then capturing three DNG files which are then automatically aligned, merged, deghosted, and tonemapped in the app,” Josh Haftel, Sr. Product Manager at Adobe said. “You get a 16-bit floating point DNG, with all of the benefits of both an HDR and a raw photo, which is processed by the same algorithms with the same quality as the HDR technology built into Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom.”

Though you may find the images only slightly different than using Apple’s own HDR feature, I certainly will be experimenting with it (and am happy that when it came time to buy my latest iPhone I chose to go with more storage).

Other updates:

Amazon Prime Video: Improved parental controls, and new content push notifications.

CNN: Minor improvements is all they say. Same goes for The Economist Espresso.

ESPN: The main sports app from ESPN now features Homescreen Video which plans “he best plays of the day, breaking news and your favorite teams videos.” Other updates include a new section on the Caribbean Series and the World Baseball Classic.

Google released a whole series of app updates. The most important ones for TNM readers are the updates for Google Play Newsstand (improved article display) and Google Translate (bug fixes).

Three eBook apps were updated:

  • Kobo Books: bug fixes.
  • Scribd: Added audiobook controls throughout the app.
  • Tapas: Continue reading / read next episode behavior improved, tippers list enhanced to show top 10 tippers and your total coins tipped.

Patch: The local news company is still around, amazingly enough. This update brings the app up to version 5.8 and is for bug fixes.

WordPress: This update restores missing translations in the last release.

WSJ City: London Business News & Markets Updates: The updates makes improvements to the follow alert notifications and to the video experience for users with a slow internet connection.
