US journalist Steve Buttry dies of pancreatic cancer, blogs own obit

Longtime journalist, newspaper editor, Buttry’s last work in journalism came as the director of Student Media at LSU in Baton Rouge

This website is not really a journalism site as there are plenty of those. But occasionally it is important to point out an important passing. Yesterday, journalist Steve Buttry died after a long fight with pancreatic cancer. Buttry was very public with his illness, writing about it occasionally, and today his won WordPress site contains his obituary under his byline.

Buttry suffered through four other bouts with cancer, the first in 1999.

Buttry became editor at the Cedar Rapids Gazette in 2008, and three days into his new job came the historic flood. In 2012 he was brought in by former Washington Post editor Jim Brady to help lead editorial at Journal Register Company, which soon was renamed Digital First Media. But that company was, and is, financially insecure, and in 2014 his position was eliminated. Buttry, though, was immediately recruited by LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication where he became in the Lamar Visiting Scholar, but eventually was offered a full-time position, becoming director of Student Media in 2015.
