Twitter mobile apps to get update that will integrate live video broadcasting
The new feature is ‘powered by Periscope’ but can be used even if the mobile device owner has not installed the Periscope app or has a separate Periscope account
This move was inevitable, and also long in coming: Twitter today is rolling out an app update that will integrate its live video service into the Twitter mobile app. The ability to broadcast live video is “powered by Periscope” – which means you will not need to have the Periscope app installed on your device for it to work.
Twitter says the update is “rolling out to everyone on Twitter for iOS and Android over the coming days” which is the polite way to say Twitter probably can’t count on Apple’s App Store team to roll out the update at a specific time (in fact, it is not showing up in my iTunes list of updates as of this morning, despite articles on the tech sites that presume the update is live).
With Facebook integrating video it was only a matter of time that Twitter would, as well. It makes no sense to keep the two functions separate unless one was thinking of spinning off Periscope – which, of course, makes no sense since Twitter just bought Periscope in March of last year.
