Blurb launches new iOS app for making print picture books
The new app fills a giant hole created by Apple’s resistance to launching its own iOS apps, even where they have existing services such as print picture books
As I’ve mentioned before, Apple is not one of the better iOS app developers. Incredibly, Google is a far better iOS app developer than Apple, and one that appears more dedicated to iOS apps than the company owns the damn platform. Example? How about an app version of iBooks Author?
If you think about the apps Apple could make if they could walk and chew gum at the same time, the possibilities would be endless. Another example, also related to books, would be to create an iPhone/iPad app for making photo books. You can do that from your Mac, but you can’t from the Photos app.
One would think that Apple would have a team of people just churning out app ideas. Sure, maybe not all the ideas should be launched, but at least customers might start consider Apple apps worth keeping, instead of just gathering them all up into folders to get them out of the way.
Today, the book publishing company founded by Eileen Gittins, Blurb, has launched an iOS app for creating photo books. This was the focus of the company at the beginning, making souvenir books for movie wrap parties an the like. They are a bit expensive, but high quality compared to other solutions such as through something like CreateSpace.
The app for iPhone and iPad is officially called Blurb Photo Books: Create, Print & Share, and is, of course, free.
The app will allow users to make two different books: Mini Square 5×5 in. softcover, or Small Square 7×7 in. hardcover book. The books feature matte covers with premium lustre paper. There are three layout options to fit both vertical and horizontal photographs. Based on the website, softcover, small square books start at $14.99 for 20 pages, with each addition page costing $0.25.
