Hacker of the DNC said to be behind leak of medical data from US Olympians
The Russian associated hacker ‘Fancy Bear’ published to the web test results from such famous US athletes as gymnast Simone Biles and Serena Williams
The World Anti-Doping Agency today said that ‘Fancy Bear’ – the same hacker(s) seen as responsible for the hack of the Democratic National Committee – has gained access to the organization’s Anti-Doping Administration and Management System database.
The Russian cyber espionage group gained access through an International Olympic Committee-created account.
“WADA has been informed by law enforcement authorities that these attacks are originating out of Russia,” said Olivier Niggli, Director General, WADA “Let it be known that these criminal acts are greatly compromising the effort by the global anti-doping community to re-establish trust in Russia further to the outcomes of the Agency’s independent McLaren Investigation Report. We are reaching out to stakeholders, such as the IOC, IFs and NADOs, regarding the specific athletes impacted.”
The medical reports for a number of US Olympic athletes was released through the Fancy Bear website:
Artistic gymnast Simone Biles is one of those American doping athletes. She is a four-time Olympic gold medalist and ten-time world gold medalist. In August 2016, she tested positive after illicit methylphenidate, a psychostimulant, was detected in her sample. Moreover, Biles had been taking amphetamine for a while, according to the leaked data…
…American basketball star Elena Delle Donne’s drug test revealed that she had also used amphetamine. In addition, since 2014 she has been taking hydrocortisone that is also classified as doping…
…Serena Williams, world’s top tennis player, is taking oxycodone and hydromorphone (opioids), prednisone, prednisolone, and methylprednisolone as well. Her sister Venus Williams is used to take prednisone, prednisolone, triamcinolone and formoterol.
The WADA makes no mention of the files leaked, and whether they consider the information leaked as proof of doping, or merely non-disqualifying results. But Simone Biles tweeted twice about the leak, the second tweet reading “Having ADHD, and taking medicine for it is nothing to be ashamed of nothing that I’m afraid to let people know.”

The motivation behind the hacking and leak is likely retaliation for the banning of much of the Russian Olympic and Paralympic teams due to state sponsored doping. Recently WADA’s director general Olivier Niggli told the Norwegian broadcaster NRK that “Russia is threatening us and our informers” and mentioned daily hacking and bugging of houses.
