Morning News Round-Up: Publisher of Gawker files for personal bankruptcy

Close of a weekly newspaper chain leaves Western New York communities without a source for local news; Mag+ updates its digital edition preview app; Apple releases iTunes update

August is my least favorite month of the year. It is the one time that my allergies go crazy and I spend at least one day drugged up with antihistamines. It looks like this August will be no different.

But there is no rest for the weary, as the news business goes on.

Here this today’s Morning Brief:

Industry News:

Denton-Twitter-350Nick Denton Files for Bankruptcy (The New York Times):

Nick Denton, the founder and chief executive of Gawker Media, filed for personal bankruptcy on Monday to protect himself from a legal judgment awarded in March to the former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan in an invasion-of-privacy lawsuit.

“Ever since the verdict, this was a likely outcome,” Mr. Denton said in an instant message.

Gawker, which faces a $140 million judgment, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June and put itself up for sale. The company will be sold at an auction that is expected to occur later this month.

Closing of newspapers leaves void in WNY communities: (Buffalo Business First):

The closing last week of a chain of weekly Western New York newspapers hit close to home for this journalist. I was saddened and frustrated upon hearing the news, but the impact spread far beyond my personal feelings and opinions of what happened.

When Community Papers of WNY announced it would cease operations July 25, it ended a more than century run for The Hamburg Sun — formerly the Erie County Independent — and left the town and village of Hamburg and surrounding areas without a community newspaper. It also left such places as Gowanda and Springville without a source of community news.

Barrow County News sold to Mainstreet Newspapers (Gainesville Times):

The Barrow County News, the oldest continually operating business in Barrow County, has been acquired by Mainstreet Newspapers Inc. of Jefferson and will be merged with the Barrow Journal to become a single newspaper and website serving the people of Barrow County.
