Newsroom of Law360 petitions for union representation with NewsGuild of New York

Meanwhile, at The New York Times, 50 Guild members will be leaving the paper, 49 from the newsroom, in the latest round of company buyouts at The Gray Lady

It is incredibly interesting to me to see so many newsrooms deciding to seek union representation – interesting on several levels. First, back in the day, the least pro-union part of any newspaper was always the newsroom – print and composition, sure; the advertising side, maybe; newsroom, rarely. But this has definitely changed in the era of digital publishing.

The latest newsroom to voice support for a union is that of Law360, owned by Portfolio Media, Inc., which has petitioned for union representation with The NewsGuild of New York.


This does not mean that things are suddenly good for unions in the publishing business. On the same day as the NewsGuild touted the move by newsroom staff at Law360, it also reported the results of the latest round of buyouts at The New York Times: 53 Guild members applied for buyouts, 52 from the newsroom. Two later revoked their buyout requests, so the final number will be 50, 49 of which will come from the newsroom.

“The Times has given all of them dates for their last day of work. Some will leave in late July, but the majority will depart sometime between August and the end of the year,” the NewsGuild reported. “About half of the buyout applicants are reporters, domestic correspondents, columnists or critics. The prospect of the universal copy desk apparently did not have a significant impact on people’s decision-making, as only nine copy editors took the buyout.”

I was once, way back when, the shop steward for the advertising department at the Hearst owned Los Angeles Herald Examiner. I wasn’t in any way active in the union, but my fellow ad staffers elected me to represent them at the contract negotiations. It was very educational, to say the least. In the end, we negotiated a small pay increase, some nice minor changes throughout the company, but there was no chance we would ever strike as we knew that paper would simply be shutdown by Hearst. Three years after I left that paper it was, indeed, shuttered by Hearst.

NEW YORK, NY – July 19, 2016 – The editorial staff of legal news website Law360 on Tuesday petitioned for union representation with The NewsGuild of New York with the goal of improving management and editorial practices and ensuring that employees share in the company’s continued growth.

An overwhelming majority of the roughly 130 reporters, editors, and news assistants and apprentices at Law360 across the United States have signed on to the drive for Guild representation. They called on management to voluntarily recognize their union. Law360 is owned by LexisNexis Group, a subsidiary of RELX Group.

“We are excited to welcome this talented group of legal journalists to our union, and we call on Law360 to recognize the will of the majority of its editorial employees to have union representation,” said Peter Szekely, president of The NewsGuild of New York. “Their dedication to improving their workplace advances the Guild’s longstanding mission to advocate for journalists, improve their working conditions and fight for industry-wide standards.”

Law360 is a fast-growing publisher of legal news and analysis. Despite the company’s growth, employee compensation lags behind competitors, and editorial staffers have questioned Law360’s overtime practices, strict story quotas and a general lack of transparency in the workplace.

Law360’s editorial staff began organizing soon after management enforced a non-compete agreement against a recently departed employee. As part of a recent settlement with New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, which stemmed from an investigation initiated by The NewsGuild, the company has discontinued its practice of requiring employees to sign non-compete agreements, which had restricted their ability to find other jobs.

“We are proud of the work we do at Law360,” the organizing committee said in a statement. “We want to see the company continue to grow and thrive, and we believe we deserve to grow and thrive with it. As editorial staffers, we deserve to have our contributions recognized and to have a voice in the newsroom. The only way for that to happen is for us to organize collectively.”
