Hearst names Jay Fielden to succeed David Granger as editor-in-chief of Esquire

Granger has been editor of the men’s magazine since 1997; Fielden has been editorial director of Town & Country magazine, a new editor will be named shortly

NEW YORK, NY – January 29, 2016 – Hearst Magazines today announced that Jay Fielden has been named editor-in-chief of Esquire and editorial director of Town & Country. Fielden had been editor-in-chief of Town & Country since January 2011; he replaces David Granger, who will leave Esquire on March 31 after nearly two decades. An incoming editor-in-chief of Town & Country will be named shortly. The announcement was made by Hearst President and CEO Steven R. Swartz and Hearst Magazines President David Carey, to whom Fielden will continue to report.

With insightful coverage of philanthropy, society, fashion, art and the lifestyles of the world’s wealthiest individuals, Fielden’s Town & Country has published the work of award-winning writers, including Martin Amis, Dwight Garner, Mary Karr, Jay McInerney and Vicky Ward. Fielden debuted a series of annual “T&C 50” lists, from influential families and philanthropists to bachelors and “modern swans,” relaunched Town & Country Travel and, in collaboration with VP/Publisher Jennifer Bruno, introduced the Town & Country Philanthropy Summit, now heading into its third year. Since 2011, Town & Country has grown revenue 46 percent, single-copy sales 12 percent and total circulation 6 percent. In the first half of 2015, the magazine posted a 7 percent increase in single-copy sales, and the website, townandcountrymag.com, has nearly quadrupled traffic year-over-year.

Before joining Town & Country, Fielden was editor-in-chief of Men’s Vogue from 2005 to 2009. Previously, he served as arts editor at Vogue, from 2000 to 2005. Before that, Fielden spent nearly 10 years at The New Yorker where he edited both fiction and reportage.

During his tenure, Granger led Esquire to 16 National Magazine Awards and drove innovative editorial expansion across digital and television platforms.

Carey added, “David’s time at Esquire has been epic and innovative, and includes so many accolades and milestones, from the first-ever digital magazine cover to a complete, online archive, as well as the brand’s 75th and 80th anniversaries and its 1,000th issue. His influence has been substantial, and we are grateful for his many contributions to Esquire, and to Hearst.”
