Serena Kutchinsky appointed Digital Editor of Newsweek Europe, Graham Smith hired as Deputy Online News Editor

Kutchinsky was previously Digital Editor at Prospect Magazine, and before that the Assistant Digital Editor of the Sunday Times

LONDON, England – January 6, 2016 — Newsweek, the premier weekly news magazine in Europe, has announced a raft of significant hires to bolster its award-winning editorial team as it seeks to continue to deliver ground-breaking intelligence and entertainment to a discerning media audience.

The hires come as parent company IBT Media UK prepares for further growth in 2016, with its monthly readership of 90 million globally set to build up further following this investment in quality journalism.

Serena Kutchinsky has been appointed Digital Editor of Newsweek Europe. She comes from Prospect Magazine where she was Digital Editor. Kutchinsky was also the Assistant Digital Editor of the Sunday Times – part of the award-winning team which launched The Sunday Times website and tablet editions. She has worked at Condé Nast, Time Out and thelondonpaper and is an expert on digital culture, politics and gender – frequently chairing debates at events such as the Hay literary festivals, the Edinburgh Book Festival and BBC Radio 3’s Free Thinking Festival.

Kutchinsky will be leading the growing digital team and helping to plan Newsweek’s strategy for growth. She said: “I am delighted to be joining such an historic title and to have the opportunity to help shape its digital future. We are putting together an exciting and dedicated team of reporters who will be covering an incredibly diverse range of topics.”

Graham Smith has been hired as Kutchinsky’s Deputy Online News Editor and joins Newsweek from businesstraveller.com where he was Editor. Smith spent many years at the Mail Online.

Newsweek Europe’s Editor, Matt McAllester, who joined the growing operation in August, said: “Together with Serena we’ll be playing a key leadership role as we grow the staff and the site’s reach and influence.”

Other hires spear-headed by McAllester include Naina Bajekal, who joins on January 11th as Associate Editor and was previously at the London office of TIME; sports reporter Teddy Cutler, who moves from The Times; and Josh Lowe who joins in January as a reporter covering European politics and news. Lowe has written for the New Statesman, the Telegraph, the Times and the Evening Standard and is a regular contributor to radio.

Anthony Cuthbertson will also be joining Newsweek Europe in January. He made his mark last year at the International Business Times UK, IBT Media’s flagship news offering which focuses on the multitude of forces shaping the 21st century’s borderless global economies. Cuthbertson was part of an award-winning editorial team at IBT UK where he was recently recognised as Digital Writer of the Year at the 2015 Online Media Awards, thanks to his incisive and thought-provoking coverage on the technological world.
