Digital First Media editor-in-chief, David J. Butler, to become editor of The Providence Journal
Prior to his current position at DFM, Butler was editor and publisher of The Detroit News, and before Executive VP for News at the Los Angeles Daily News
PITTSFORD, N.Y.– October 14, 2015 — GateHouse Media, LLC announced today that David J. Butler, who currently serves as Executive Vice President and Editor-in-Chief of a group of 75 daily newspapers, including the San Jose Mercury News, has been named The Providence Journal’s Executive Editor and Senior Vice President of News & Audience Development. Butler’s appointment is effective November 9, 2015.

Over a professional career that dates back to 1971, Butler has held virtually every newsroom job. He has worked at small, medium and large newspapers, mostly as a senior news manager. Prior to his current position at Digital First Media, Butler was Editor and Publisher of The Detroit News from 2005-2007; Executive Vice President for News and Editor of the Los Angeles Daily News from 1997-2005; and Editor of the New Haven Register (CT) from 1988-1996. He also worked as an editor with the Rocky Mountain News, in Denver; the Jacksonville Journal (FL); The Messenger-Inquirer of Owensboro, KY; The Sun-Sentinel and Fort Lauderdale News (FL); and The Southern Illinoisan, of Carbondale, IL. He holds a bachelor’s degree with a double major in journalism and photography from Southern Illinois University.
