First look: TC Media’s magazine app for the 2015 Memorial Cup hockey tournament

Universal app launched the same day that the publisher also launched a new local news app, BAC de l’Outaouais, into the Apple Newsstand

This is an app I missed when first launched on May 20, and I bet a lot of potential readers did, as well. But better late than never to applaud the effort by its publisher, Transcontinental.

MemCup-last-coverQuébec Hebdo Memorial is the kind of digital magazine app one expected to see be launched frequently back when the Newsstand was new thing, and there was far more enthusiasm for digital publishing from publishers than what we are seeing today.

The app uses the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite to build a universal app – portrait for the iPhone and landscape for the iPad. The purpose of the digital publication is to provide coverage for the 2015 Memorial Cup, or Coupe Memorial 2015, hosted by the Quebec Remparts of Quebec City, Quebec. The tournament was a round-robin between four teams to determine the champion of the Canadian Hockey League, The teams involved were the Oshawa Generals, the Kelowna Rockets, Rimouski Océanic and the Quebec Remparts.

In the end, the Oshawa Generals won their fifth Memorial Cup, defeating the Kelowna Rockets 2–1 in overtime.

MemCup-adThe Newsstand app is free, as are the 13 issues have are available today in the app’s library. The first issue was dated May 20 and one new issue was released every day until today, June 1. As the tournament concluded on Sunday, today’s issue may be the last.

I look every day inside the Newsstand and I didn’t see this app until today (clearly I don’t look at every category every single day). That someone who monitors the Newsstand so closely missed the app just goes to show you what a terrible job Apple is doing with the Newsstand. If the “New” portion of the Newssstand categories was functioning (it hasn’t been for well over a year) this app would have shown up on the front page of the Sports category. But it didn’t and potential readers were missed.

Transcontinental is/was the publisher of The Hockey News, but this app is probably tied to this app: BAC de l’Outaouais, a very similar app that was released on the same day as Québec Hebdo Memorial. BAC de l’Outaouais is a local news app for Quebec – and both apps, naturally, are French language apps (and designed in the same manner).

Both apps appear under the Transcontinental developer account name, though these apps may soon move to a new account name as Transcontinental sold off its consumer magazines to TVA Group Inc. earlier this year. (TVA Group is majority owned by Quebecor Media.)

Both of the new apps say they come from TC Media, the part of the company that remains which concentrates on newspapers and digital news products. (Confusing, I know.)

Actually, The Hockey News is now a property of TVA Publications. But the Quebec Hebdo Memorial was an initiative from TC Media as is the BAC for the Outaouais area. It should be available on Androïd devices later this year.

Yes, you are correct. I mentioned the sale, but wasn’t very clear about the current owner of The Hockey News, which indeed move to TVA Publications as you say.
