Boston Globe calls for entries from area filmmakers for new short documentary showcase
The new program, Opinion Reel, part of the Globe’s Opinion section, is open to professional, amateur, and student documentary filmmakers
Boston, Mass. – May 11, 2015 – Are you a Boston-area documentary filmmaker with a point of view? A smartphone auteur with a story to share? The Boston Globe’s Opinion section is introducing Opinion Reel, a new showcase for locally produced short documentary films that express a distinct opinion.
The new program is open to professional, amateur, and student documentary filmmakers who live in New England or who are currently enrolled at – or are recent alumni of – a higher education institution in New England. Films can be about any subject, but must be nonfiction, be seven minutes or less, and express an opinion.
“Opinion Reel is a way for the Globe to engage our readers on new subjects and viewpoints through video or animation,” said Ellen Clegg, interim editorial page editor. “The New England region has a vibrant documentary filmmaking community. And today, nearly everyone has access to simple filmmaking tools. Opinion Reel provides a new opportunity for anyone with a strong point a view.”
Submissions for Opinion Reel opened May 10, 2015 and will continue on a rolling basis. To enter, filmmakers can upload their short documentaries to YouTube or Vimeo and submit the links to www.bostonglobe.com/opinionreel.
A panel of journalists and film experts will review and curate entries, and showcase select films on BostonGlobe.com on a rolling basis. A collection of Opinion Reel selections may also be screened at live events.
Submissions are welcomed from professional filmmakers, film students, and the public. Selection parameters are broad to encourage a wide array of submissions, but the films’ suggested length is seven minutes or shorter.
For more information and to submit an entry, visit Opinion Reel on the Boston Globe website. Entries open on May 10, 2015.
Hosted by Boston Globe’s award-winning and far-reaching Opinion section, Opinion Reel is the latest documentary film program to be introduced in the last year by the Boston Globe. Other initiatives include GlobeDocs, a monthly documentary film series, and expanded Globe coverage of documentary filmmaking within the Arts section of the Sunday Globe and on BostonGlobe.com.
