iPad app crashes cause delays with American Airlines flights
Iissues with software on iPads caused flight delays at American Airlines, the carrier said last night. The airline started using iPads in 2013 as a way of cutting back on paper, but the glitch last night showed the risk of depending on apps on mobile devices.
“Some flights are experiencing an issue with a software application on pilot iPads. In some cases, the flight has had to return to the gate to access a WiFi connection to fix the issue,” the airline said in a statement.
In the end, the airline blamed their third party app, not the iPads themselves, for the problem.
“The pilot told us when they were getting ready to take off, the iPad screens went blank, both for the captain and copilot, so they didn’t have the flight plan,” Quartz reported a passenger saying.
