The New York Times launches on Instagram
To mark the launch, The Times has assigned photographers from all over the world to capture their interpretation of the theme ‘Beginnings’
NEW YORK, NY – March 9, 2015 — The New York Times today launched a primary account on Instagram (@NYTimes) to share and showcase the breadth of The Times’s photojournalism and visual reporting.
On Instagram, The Times will share work by staff and freelance photographers, provide richer context to breaking news, and experiment with an Instagram-first method of storytelling. The Times’s Instagram strategy is tailored toward intimate interaction with our audience in ways that amplify our news report.
“With the launch of The New York Times Instagram account, we will bring The Times’s rich, visual storytelling to a new audience,” said Alexandra MacCallum, Assistant Masthead Editor for audience development. “Our Instagram strategy is designed for the social, mobile space where we hope to build awareness of The Times’s brand and engage new readers with our incredible photojournalism.”
To mark the launch, The Times has assigned photographers from all over the world to capture their interpretation of the theme “Beginnings.” The first in the series is Bryan Denton (@bdentonphoto) who documented the beginning of the end of the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone with a series of photos about touch.
Other featured photographers include Todd Heisler (@heislerphoto) and Doug Mills (@nytmills) in the Unites States, Newsha Tavakolian (@newshatavakolian) in Iran, Daniel Berehulak (@danielberehulak) in India, Adam Ferguson (@adamfergusonphoto) in Thailand, and Sim Chi Yin (@chiyin_sim) in China.
The series will run from March 9 through March 15 with photos from a new location shared each day.
The Times’s primary Instagram account will join the existing Times Instagram accounts for T Magazine, its video team, sports desk, travel, food, and fashion sections.
