Chefs Feed secures $4M in funding in Series A round
Led by the former co-founder of Zinio, Rich Maggiotto, Chefs Feed bills its mobile app as ‘the antithesis of Yelp for restaurants and food discovery’
Those you who read our story on Chefs Feed, either in the January-February issue of App Publisher, or on the new AP website, will know that the company not only offers an interesting mobile app, but also is doing some unique work for its restaurant/chef clients.
Today, Rich Maggiotto, CEO at Chefs Feed reports that the company has raised $4 million in Series A funding, led by ARTIS Ventures, and also funded by Structure Capital, Haas Portman and Subtraction Capital, as well as individual investors.
“We have made great strides this year across the business from growing our younger-leaning, mobile savvy users to aligning with some tremendous, forward-thinking brands,” said Rich Maggiotto, CEO at Chefs Feed. “We’re intent on being the antithesis of Yelp for restaurants and food discovery. We want to help chefs and their restaurants regain the ability to shape the narrative supporting their brand and food. We want to help them put the right butts in the right seats. We are moving the industry forward.”
Launched by two PR pros, the brothers Jarad and Steve Rivera, the Chefs Feed app was created when the brothers realized that they had been compiling a wealth of great information from top chefs.
“The idea was that while they were doing that (PR) as part of their business they were assembling a personal portfolio of recommendations, of restaurants and dishes that some of their friends who were chefs were telling them about,” Maggiotto said.
“When they sat back and looked at a booklet filled with all these great recommendations they said ‘we should create some sort of guide around this’.”
Recently the company has closed distribution and promotional deals with brands such as Uber, Urbanspoon, Virgin America, Complex Media, Foursquare, Outside Lands, Red Bull, and Food & Wine.
“Chefs Feed understands what the restaurant industry is all about, and how much heart and soul goes into owning and running a great establishment,” said Stuart Peterson, co-founder and senior partner at ARTIS Ventures in Chef Feed’s funding announcement. “The company provides the industry with tools to build and amplify their own brand, especially on mobile devices. As smartphones become our constant connection to the world, we like that Chefs Feed is positioned to be the credible source for what’s good among the rabble that has come to overwhelm food media.”
