Press Release:

WASHINGTON, DC – January 9, 2015 — Miranda Mulligan, executive director of Northwestern University Knight Lab, will join the National Geographic Digital group as creative director on Jan. 29. Reporting to Keith W. Jenkins, general manager of National Geographic Digital, Mulligan will be responsible for leading National Geographic’s digital design team and helping to redefine the Society’s multiplatform storytelling.

Nationalgeographic.com, the Society’s award-winning website, attracts about 24 million global visitors a month. It combines National Geographic’s video, photography and maps with in-depth news, information and interactive features about animals, nature, destinations, cultures and National Geographic products and events.

“I’m delighted that Miranda will be joining National Geographic,” said Jenkins. “She has a wealth of experience as a designer, journalist and digital strategist, and she will play an integral role in providing creative direction for our Digital team.”

As head of Northwestern University Knight Lab, Mulligan has worked to advance news media innovation and education through projects that help make information more meaningful and promote quality storytelling on the Web. Focused on designing interactions that enhance browser-based, mobile experiences to increase consumer engagement, she has led strategy, product development and design, and educational efforts for the technology and journalism lab, which produces interactive publishing tools used by hundreds of thousands of journalists. In 2014, the Lab’s “Publishers’ Toolbox” Web tools received the Gannett Foundation Award for Technical Innovation in the Service of Digital Journalism from the Online News Association.

Mulligan is also cofounder of #SNDMakes, the Society for News Design’s digital-focused prototyping workshop geared to developing and furthering the digital news design community. It received the President’s Award from the Society for News Design in 2014.

Mulligan has worked at the intersection of content and Web technology for over a decade. Before joining Northwestern University Knight Lab in July 2012, she was digital design director for The Boston Globe, responsible for providing creative leadership, from art direction and information architecture to internal tools and project management. Previously, Mulligan was a multimedia presentation editor and news artist at The Virginian-Pilot newspaper, and she taught communication design at Virginia Wesleyan College and Ball State University.

She has a bachelor’s degree in photojournalism and English from the University of Miami.
