Dao Nguyen promoted to publisher of BuzzFeed
Nguyen has been Director of Growth at the website, was previously Director of Product Management at Dow Jones Ventures
The CEO of BuzzFeed, Jonah Peretti, has named Dao Nguyen the site’s new publisher. Nguyen has been Director of Growth at BuzzFeed for the past two years, and before that was at Dow Jones Ventures where she was Director of Product Management.
“Dao is a new type of Publisher,” Peretti wrote in a memo obtained by re/code. “She isn’t the heir to a newspaper baron and she won’t be responsible for the business, selling ads or physical newsstand distribution. Instead, she’ll lead publishing for the social web, in the most modern sense, where data science, the CMS, technology, and a deep understanding of social networks, mobile devices, and digital video matter most. If publishing is “the activity of making information available to the general public,” then I’m confident Dao will become the very best publisher in a rapidly changing industry where technology and data science are the key to success.”
Nguyen was at Le Monde Interactif beginning in 2001, where she was Director of Technical Projects before becoming CEO in June 2006. Nguyen said, while in that position, that the early efforts to move newspapers onto digital devices like the Kindle eReader were unsatisfactory. “There is no newspaper experience on a Kindle. They have shoved a newspaper into a book device,” Nguyen said in 2008.
But Nguyen was let go by Le Monde that year and later said that it ” was fine with me. I never set out to run a big media organization. I never meant to live in France for the rest of my life. I’m not even a Francophile.”
Her move to BuzzFeed seems to have been a great fit as traffic has skyrocketed and Nguyen now finds herself as the new publisher, though she won’t be in charge of editorial (or advertising or video, according to re/code – what that leaves one supposes is… growth).
