‘Guide to Digital Publishing Platforms’ now available in the Apple iBooks Store

The second edition of TNM’s Guide contains 68 company entries in a 204 page interactive eBook, filled with video, galleries, platform screenshots, as well as full contact information and platform descriptions

The second edition of TNM’s Guide to Digital Publishing Platforms went live this morning in the Apple iBooks Store. The 204 reference guide features 68 companies that provide digital publishing solutions for both commercial magazine publishers, as well as would-be self-publishers.

Guide-IntroThe first edition of The Guide appeared last fall inside Tablet Publishing – Winter 2013, our experiment with tablet magazine publishing. That edition of the Guide contained 44 company listings, as well as magazine articles concerning such topics as tablet sales, the benefits of a third party audit, an interview with designer Joe Zeff, and a feature on the new tablet magazine from Bonnier built for their client Sony Cameras.

In order to create a better reference tool, the decision was made to publish the second edition of The Guide as an interactive eBook. This allows for easier updating and production, and to increase the shelf-life of the product.

What makes TNM’s directory different is that it is interactive, containing 39 videos, many galleries and screenshots, and even on Keynote presentation. Each company, in order to be included, needed to have submitted a completed survey form that requested contact information, a general description of their digital publishing solution, and the platforms which they support. Companies then received a proof of their entries in order to make sure that they were correct and up-to-date.

As was the case following the publishing of the first edition, several new companies have approached TNM about being included in the Guide and will be added when the first update is published. Companies that did not complete the survey were not added to The Guide as it was felt that companies unresponsive to inquiries could not be recommended as publishing partners.

Companies were not charged to participate in the publishing project in order to attempt to assemble the most comprehensive directory of digital magazine services possible. Digital publishing platform companies come from around the world: the US, UK, Australia, Singapore, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, The Netherlands, and other countries represented.

The second edition of the Guide to Digital Publishing Platforms costs $3.99 and can be read on a Mac or iPad. If Apple extends the capabilities of iBooks Author to the iPhone then it is possible that a mobile edition will be created, as well.
