Taylor Hatmaker and Micah Singleton added to Daily Dot editorial teams to anchor Tech section

Internet news site adds six new editorial staff writers including Rae Votta as YouTube beat reporter, Samuel Lingle as sports reporter

Press Release:

Austin, TX — June 26, 2014 — Following a record-high 11.5 million unique visitors in May, the Daily Dot has completed an unprecedented round of editorial hiring to better serve the needs of the Internet generation. The addition of six staff writers underscores the company’s deep commitment to original reporting and progressive, investigative journalism.

As the paper of record for Internet-community news and cultural commentary, the Daily Dot covers aspects of the entertainment industry overlooked by traditional media. To that end, the company is adding to its roster a new YouTube beat reporter, Rae Votta; a professional esports player turned reporter, Samuel Lingle; and as part of the company’s recent Geek expansion, gaming reporter Dennis Scimeca, whose work has previously appeared in Polygon, Salon, and VentureBeat. You can look for Rae’s coverage from Vidcon, the annual YouTube conference, later this week.

Taylor Hatmaker and Micah Singleton, two of the most prominent voices in the industry, will now anchor the site’s burgeoning Tech section, which launched in March. A longtime senior reporter at ReadWrite and Yahoo, Hatmaker has earned a reputation for her forward-thinking analysis and personal approach to tech coverage, while Singleton, the former editor in chief of CE: The Magazine, has been cited by CNN, the Guardian, and the Verge. Both were named “rising stars” and part of the “future of journalism” by the Huffington Post in 2013.

In anticipation of the Daily Dot’s relaunch of The Kernel, longtime contributor and former Huffington Post editor Aaron Sankin will also be joining the company full time.

“It’s a rare luxury to go through a round of editorial hiring for a newsroom in 2014,” says Managing Editor Austin Powell. “We’re grateful for the opportunity and couldn’t be more excited to welcome such incredible talent to our team.”
