David J. Fishman named CEO of TV Guide, Jack Kliger to exit

The investment firm that owns TV Guide Magazine, OpenGate Capital, announced today that the current COO, David J. Fishman, will be promoted to CEO. Jack Kliger, who currently holds the top spot at the legacy media brand, will be leaving following a transition period.

“Having played a critical role in creating TV Guide Magazine’s efficient, modern infrastructure, David is the ideal person to lead the magazine into its next chapter,” Andrew Nikou, OpenGate Capital’s founder, Managing Partner and CEO, said in the announcement.

“David has exhibited strong leadership in brand development and editorial oversight over the last five years with the magazine. We thank Jack for his exceptional work that has enabled us to uncover and generate value in this storied brand, including returning it to consistent profitability. Jack’s efforts have helped make TV Guide Magazine a particularly exciting investment for OpenGate and we look forward to continuing to work with him as we further develop our media asset base, and wish him well in any other future endeavors that he will pursue through his advisory firm Kliger Media Associates.”

OpenGate Capital has owned TV Guide since 2008, which also owns the Pennysaver in the U.S., and Fleurus Presse, a multi-title publisher in France.

This is at the same level it recorded in its last 2008 publisher’s statement (meaning it has maintained its rate base). But it only has 8,644 digital subscribers (564 digital single copy buyers).

At one point TV Guide had a native tablet app that used the Mag+ platform. That app no longer appears in the Apple App Store and its only existing app is TV Guide Mobile, which is a universal app.

The new CEO, Fishman, has previously Group Publisher of Hachette Filipacchi Media, and was Corporate Director Business Development at Condé Nast Publications.

“I am excited for the opportunity to take TV Guide Magazine on to the next chapter in its long history – and to work with the magazine’s talented staff as we pursue the myriad of new opportunities for this iconic brand,” Fishman said. “I am also incredibly indebted to Jack Kliger, who has been my mentor, my partner, and my trusted friend for almost 20 years.”
