Capital Gazette Communications sold to the Baltimore Sun Media Group
The Baltimore Sun Media Group (BSMG) has acquired Capital Gazette Communications, the publisher of The Capital in Annapolis and Maryland Gazette, from Landmark Media Enterprises LLC. Landmark Publishing is based in Norfolk, Virginia and also publishes The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk) and the Los Alamos Monitor (Los Alamos, New Mexico).
BSMG also recently closed on its acquisition of City Paper, an alt-weekly in Baltimore. BSMG is part of The Tribune Company, which said it would spin-off its newspaper group into a separate media company.
“We want the newspapers and websites to remain the source for news and opinions on local politics, communities, sports and the arts,” Timothy E. Ryan, publisher, president and CEO of BSMG, said in a statement.
“We are buying The Capital and its sister publications to enable crucial local reporting to grow and thrive. We respect and intend to maintain the excellent local news coverage and editorial voice (the company) has provided for so many years,” Ryan said.
Maryland Gazette traces its origins back to 1767 when it was founded by William Parks.
