SAN FRANCISCO AND NEW YORK – April 25, 2014 – Circa CEO Matt Galligan announced today that the acclaimed mobile news startup has hired John Maloney as the company’s new President. Maloney, formerly the President of Tumblr, co-founder of UrbanBaby and an angel investor and advisor, joins the two-year-old company and will help expand its New York presence.
In his role, Maloney will lead Circa’s operations, business development and growth, allowing Galligan to lead product and marketing vision, development and strategy. The company currently offers its popular iOS and Android app, Circa News, with plans for releases on other platforms.
“We’re completely thrilled to bring someone of John’s caliber, experience and vision to the team,” said Galligan. “Since our launch 18 months ago, we’ve established the mobile news industry and have created a product that fundamentally changes how news is reported and read on mobile devices. As more attention is paid to mobile news, we believe John will be instrumental in helping us grow exponentially, develop the company and strengthen our position as the industry leader.”
Prior to joining Circa, Maloney was the President of Tumblr from 2008 to 2012. In his role, Maloney led the company’s day-to-day operations, helping to grow the Tumblr community to more than 50 million people. Before Tumblr, Maloney founded UrbanBaby in 1999 and later sold the company to CNET. A staple of the technology community since 1991, he has invested and advised more than 25 startups.
“Matt and this talented small team have built the first mobile news company from the ground up,” said Maloney. “Circa is defining how future generations will read news on their mobile devices. Matt’s an exceptional product guy who sees around the corner what the future of news looks like. I’m going to help Matt and the team scale; I’m thrilled to be a part of Circa.”
Circa is the first media organization to write news strictly for the mobile reading experience, with the company’s editorial staff reporting on news stories in comprehensive, to-the-point and easy-to-digest atoms of information. Circa News’ signature Follow feature allows readers to receive updates on new developments for specific stories they care about as they happen.
With its launch in October 2012, Circa established the mobile news category. Circa News was named a Best App of 2013 by both Apple and Google. The company was also named Mashable’s No. 1 Startup to Watch in 2014, a VentureBeat Startup to Watch in 2014, one of The Next Web’s 20 West Coast Startups to Watch in 2014, one of Entrepreneur’s 5 Must-Watch San Francisco Tech Startups in 2014 and one of CNBC’s Five Startups to Watch in 2014.
