Facebook launches FB Newswire, a resource for journalist for embedding content from the social networking site
New service powered Storyful, a company acquired by News Corp last year
The social networking site Facebook is getting in the newswire business, launching FB Newswire, a service powered by Storyful. FB Newswire is designed to encourage journalists to embed content from Facebook into their news stories.
“FB Newswire aggregates newsworthy content shared publicly on Facebook by individuals and organizations across the world for journalists to use in their reporting,” Andy Mitchell, Director, News and Global Media Partnerships, said on the Facebook website.
The effort is an effort to combat Twitter’s influence on journalists who routinely monitor the tweets on their timeline for news bits. Facebook gets millions of new posts every day, and Storyful’s job is to curate that information to make it useful.
Whether mainstream news organizations will find the service of value will be determined by the ease of finding what a journalist is looking for. But one can imagine the thousands of websites that aggregate content in order to drive traffic and earn Google Adsense dollars enthusiastically using the service.
