PressReader donates digital newspaper technology, tablets to help Lac-Megantic library rebuild

Donation will allow citizens access to newspapers and magazines from around the world

Press Release:

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – April 9, 2014 — PressReader, an all-you-can read digital newsstand, is donating technology and its service to the municipal library of Lac-Megantic, Quebec. The gift will help the library rebuild after it was destroyed last July when a runaway tanker train derailed, exploded and destroyed part of the town, killing 47 people.

Vancouver-based PressReader is helping Médiathèque Nelly-Arcan, the municipal library of Lac-Mégantic, to rebuild its periodical collection after losing nearly all of its inventory in the tragedy last summer.
PressReader, a digital newsstand with over 2,500 international newspapers and magazines, is donating tablets preloaded with the PressReader app, as well as providing an annual subscription to Library PressDisplay, the website version, for all of its computers so that library patrons can access an international catalogue of periodicals without the requirements of additional shelf space. The library of Lac-Mégantic is hoping to re-open with PressReader’s service this spring.

“The community of Lac-Megantic, and all of the province of Quebec, should know that Canadian companies like ours stand behind them in their efforts to rebuild,” said Igor Smirnoff, chief commercial officer for PressReader. “Our company’s vision is to connect people through news, so we hope our small donation will make it possible for the library patrons of Lac-Megantic to feel connected to that support by reading newspapers and magazines from across Quebec, throughout Canada and around the world.”

“The Board of Directors of the Mediatheque Nelly-Arcan wishes to sincerely thank PressReader for its generous contribution to the revival of our library,” said Jacques Dostie, a member of the library’s board. “It will be a new service for our citizens who will surely appreciate and enjoy this openness to the world that will be offered.”
