Monotype acquires Mark Boulton Design, a Welsh web design studio

In addition to custom work for brands such as CERN, ESPN and Al Jazeera, Mark Boulton Design has developed, marketed and sold the Gridset responsive layout tool

WOBURN, Mass. – April 8, 2014 — Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading provider of typefaces, technology and expertise for creative applications and consumer devices, has acquired Mark Boulton Design Ltd., a seven-person Web design studio based in Cardiff, Wales, U.K.

Monotype acquired all outstanding shares of Mark Boulton Design Ltd. (a privately-held company) for approximately $1.75 million, including inducement awards of approximately $1.0 million in restricted common stock of Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc., which is subject to vesting over four years based on continued employment. With the acquisition, Monotype gains recognized expertise in Web design and Web publishing, markets that have been identified as strategic to the company’s growth objectives. Employees of Mark Boulton Design will continue to work from their current locations.

Boulton, who cofounded Mark Boulton Design in 2006 with his wife, Emma, has worked exclusively in Web design for more than 15 years. A recognized authority on Web design, Boulton is also a speaker and author, having written “A Practical Guide to Designing for the Web,” which details techniques for designing websites using the principles of graphic design. Prior to founding Mark Boulton Design, he was a graphic designer and art director serving a variety of well-known brands. With a background in traditional graphic and typographic design, Boulton is also a member of the International Society of Typographic Designers and writes a design blog at markboulton.co.uk.

In addition to custom work for brands such as CERN, ESPN and Al Jazeera, Mark Boulton Design has developed, marketed and sold the Gridset responsive layout tool, which enables Web designers to use grid-system composition techniques as part of a responsive design process. Designers can dynamically build and apply various grids that are optimized for any number of devices. Monotype is currently evaluating the tool for use with the company’s Typecast™ application, an award-winning browser-based tool that lets designers more easily design Web pages with Web fonts.
