Update: the Microsoft Office apps for iPad (app size corrections)
This is an update to the post First Look: Microsoft Office apps for iPad – long overdue, possibly essential, possibly irrelevant which appear on TNM yesterday. There is a need to correct one element of the post, thanks to some faulty information on the apps from none other than Apple.
In that post it is mentioned that the Microsoft Office apps – Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OneNote – were fairly moderate in size, and in the case of PowerPoint, actually smaller than the Apple equivalent, Keynote.
Well, the lesson to be learned is to not trust those file sizes you see in the App Store as they will vary widely from what your iPad will actually say once the app is installed.
Here are the file sizes I see when using the “Usage” tab found inside Settings:
Word – App Size 440 MB, plus 10.8 MB of documents and data when first loaded
Excel – App Size 414 MB, plus 19.0 MB of documents and data when first loaded
PowerPoint – App Size 406 MB, plus 10.8MB of documents and data when first loaded
OneNote – App Size 354 MB, plus 51.2 MB of documents and data when first loaded
Pages – App Size 372 MB, plus 1.5 MB of documents and data when first loaded
Numbers – App Size 368 MB, plus 848 KB of documents and data when first loaded
KeyNote – App Size 538 MB, plus 8.0 KB of documents and data when first loaded
Obviously, the difference here is what the download size is versus the install size – my bad. But one assumed the difference would not be so dramatic. It also shows just how much space you really need to dedicate to these productivity apps.
