Research director from the Associated Press, Lynn Dombek, the latest to join First Look Media
Prior to joining the AP, Dombek had more than 20 years’ experience in a variety of research roles, including positions at ABC News and NBC Nightly News
NEW YORK, NY – March 17, 2014 — First Look Media, the new journalism organization created by Pierre Omidyar, today announced that Lynn Dombek will become the organization’s research director. Dombek will build a team that provides evidence-based, primary-source research support to First Look and all of its digital publications. The team will also create innovative tools to elevate the work of journalists and provide data-driven stories directly to users.
Dombek comes to First Look from the Associated Press, where she has served as research director for the past 10 years. In that role she led the award-winning News Research Center and integrated researchers across all AP platforms and departments. Her team worked collaboratively to inform a broad array of articles on a global scale, from breaking news to in-depth features. She also led the creation of cutting-edge products and tools, including a database to track the deaths of Iraqi civilians and a system to monitor demographic information from Guantanamo Bay prisoners. Additionally, she oversaw the creation of global planning websites for the newsroom that have set the standard for editorial staff.
“Research is at the heart of what First Look will do, and Lynn is a true leader in her field,” said Eric Bates, executive editor of First Look Media. “Under her direction, researchers will do more than support the work of our reporters and writers – they will play an integral role in creating journalism that matters, and in finding ways to tell stories in dynamic new ways.”
Prior to joining the AP, Dombek had more than 20 years’ experience in a variety of research roles, including positions at ABC News and NBC Nightly News. She also worked at Time, Inc. as assistant director of their Research Center.
“I have a passion for telling the important stories of our day, and First Look gives me the perfect opportunity to do that,” said Dombek. “We have the resources and expertise to build a research function from the ground up, and to use best practices, as well as new ideas, to create journalism that is both engaging and effective. I’m excited to partner with this talented team to build this great organization.”
Dombek will be based in New York City and will start on April 7.
