Apple releases iOS update to address security issue

The weekend is upon us and Apple has given you something to do tonight when you plug your iPhone or iPad into your computer: download the latest update to iOS.

iOS7-update-featureiOS 7.0.6 provides a fix for SSL connection verification – in other words, it is a security update.

Here is what Apple has to say about it:

OS 7.0.6

Data Security

Available for: iPhone 4 and later, iPod touch (5th generation), iPad 2 and later

Impact: An attacker with a privileged network position may capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS

Description: Secure Transport failed to validate the authenticity of the connection. This issue was addressed by restoring missing validation steps.

But what happened to iOS 7.0.5 you might ask, and with good reason. Most users are who think their devices are up-to-date are on iOS 7.0.4. Only a small number of users received the last update, issued on January 29th. That update was a minor maintenance update to correct network provisioning in China for some iPhone 5s and 5c models sold there. Chances are you never were prompted to install that one.

The new update is relatively small and should only take a few minutes to download, extract and then install.

Have a good weekend.
