MPA and ASME to combine events beginning in February 2015

The American Magazine (Media) Conference and the National Magazine Awards Annual Dinner to be held on consecutive days

Press Release:

New York, NY – January 22, 2014 -– MPA-The Association of Magazine Media and ASME (The American Society of Magazine Editors) will present magazine media’s two premier events – The American Magazine (Media) Conference and the National Magazine Awards Annual Dinner on consecutive days, beginning in February 2015, it was announced today by Mary G. Berner, president and CEO, MPA and Sid Holt, chief executive, ASME. This move will establish the foundation of a “Magazine Media Week,” enabling greater participation for non-New York-based members of both organizations and inspiring member companies to take advantage of this gathering of industry executives to host their own complementary meetings and presentations.

Historically, the National Magazine Awards Annual Dinner has been held in May (as is the case for 2014), and AMC in October, with the two-day convention now scheduled for Feb. 2 and 3, 2015, and the dinner on the opening evening.

In making the announcement, Berner said, “We see this as a great way for these marquee events to have even more impact, while making it possible for even more members, including our independent magazine media members (IMAG), who are geographically scattered across the country, to attend both. With magazine media’s advertising footprint of both print pages and tablet units up five percent, we are coming off a very strong 2013. This is another way to capture that momentum, celebrate our achievements and grow our businesses individually and collectively. As ever, I am thrilled to have the full support of MPA’s Board of Directors, including Condé Nast’s President Bob Sauerberg, who is serving as our next AMC chair.”

“I can say for all the members of the ASME board that we’re excited to be working with MPA on the launch of Magazine Media Week. A lot of ASME members have said to me that handing out awards in May for stories that were published the year before took the shine off the Ellie, so moving the National Magazine Awards Annual Dinner to February makes sense for all of us. ASME will be able to celebrate the great print and digital work in magazines right after those stories are published —and share that celebration with the hundreds of industry leaders who attend AMC but often missed the NMA dinner,” said Holt.

This year’s National Magazine Awards Dinner will be held on May 1, 2014 at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. In order to align dates, there will be no AMC held during the calendar year 2014.
