New eBook from TNMDM: ‘Talking Digital’ published inside the Apple iBooks Store
The last of the early TNM Digital Media publishing experiments was published today. Talking Digital: Conversations with Publishing Executives, a collection of interview sourced articles, many that have their origins here at Talking New Media, was published today inside the Apple iBooks Store as an interactive eBook.
Talking Digital includes ten articles that center on digital publishing efforts over the past three+ years, plus a foreword and concluding chapter. Included are interviews with Gregg Hano and Mike Haney of Mag+ who discuss the origins of the digital publishing platform from the early days at Bonnier to the spin off as a separate business unit. Mark Edmiston discusses the launch of Nomad Editions, which began launching online magazines, moved them to the iPad, but eventually chose to shutdown their digital magazine launch efforts to concentrate on providing digital publishing solutions for established magazine brands.
Two articles talk about the eBook publishing efforts begun by newspaper and magazine companies – The Boston Globe and The Nation magazine. The final two articles feature interviews with Liz Castro, a leader in ePub publishing and the author of the book What’s Up With Catalonia, and an extensive interview with Joe Zeff of Joe Zeff Design – part of the interview appears in Tablet Publishing magazine app, as well.
The new eBook was conceived as part of a series of publishing experiments that began with the publishing of A Darker Sun, a fine art photography eBook, and was to end with Tablet Publishing, the digital magazine app. The goal was to establish new accounts with Apple’s App Store and paid books areas, as well as to experiment with iBooks Author and other digital publishing solutions. Talking Digital was originally planned to be the second release in the series, but the digital magazine grew from a small project to one that ended up featuring almost 200 pages of news and information.
The project’s goal was to preserve a few of the early interviews conducted early in the life of Talking New Media, which the iPad was new, and publishers began to experiment with publishing to tablets. For instance, Jeff Price, who was the newly name publisher of Sporting News in 2010, talked to TNM about his company’s then-new digital online magazine. The project went from online to tablets, thanks to their partner at the time, Zinio.
Talking Digital also looks at the new digital product extensions being created by traditional print media companies. The eBook includes two interviews with publishing professionals who are leading new eBook publishing efforts at media companies not traditionally known for book publishing: Dan Zedek from the Boston Globe and Art Stupar from The Nation magazine – both print publishing companies began new eBook publishing efforts over the last few years, and each discuss their common motivation behind their new digital publishing efforts. There is also an interview with the publisher of the photography magazine Focus who discusses his new digital-only magazines that are being produced while he continues to produce his flagship photography magazine in both print and digital replica formats.
Talking Digital was published using iBooks Author, which means the eBook is fully interactive, but also only is available for Apple’s iPad and Macs. Ironically, despite all the added interactive material, the price must remain low – $3.99 in the U.S. iBooks Store – because eBooks are priced at lower levels than their print counterparts.
A print version of Talking Digital is in production and will appear in the spring inside the Amazon.com ecosystem.
All of TNM Digital Media’s eBook and magazine app efforts can be found on the separate website for TNMDM.
