Apple all-out promotion for Beyonce release reflects music retail dominance

Beyoncé release mirrors record store promotions of old, only the digital outlet is new

Maybe so many of the tech and media writers are so young, but the media’s response to the new Beyoncé CD is a bit odd. According to many, the CD’s release, “without” warning, and only inside the iTunes store, was unprecedented.

Really? My memory must be failing me, but in the days of Tower Records it was a common practice to pick on dominate retailer and release the record suddenly, supported with lots of banners, and maybe an appearance by the artist themselves. Of course, I used to live in Los Angeles, so I suppose we got used to these surprise releases at the Sunset store.

But Beyoncé’s new release is simply a recognition that only a couple retailers now dominate music: Apple and That Apple only sells digital may be different, but they are still the giant retailer of music.

In any case, the promotion worked, and buy this week is over the new release will have sold a million units.
