Tablet Publishing magazine: TNM Digital Media launches single issue app
Stand-alone app features a Guide to Digital Publishing Platforms for Magazine Publishers
The tablet publishing platform has a new digital magazine title… and its about the tablet publishing platform. Tablet Publishing – Winter 2013 is a stand-alone app, part of a series of digital publishing experiments being conducted by the same team behind this site, Talking New Media, and being released under the new publishing company name TNM Digital Media LLC.
The digital magazine issue contains a Guide to Digital Publishing Platforms for Magazine Publishers, an interactive directory that contains 44 companies that provide digital publishing solutions to magazine publishers. The companies included in the Guide are: 29th Street Publishing, Adobe, Aquafadas, App Studio (Quark), Aysling Digital Media Solutions, Baker Framework, Better Press, Bluepaper, BlueToad, CoverPage, DoApp, eDition, ePublish4me, ExactEditions, FutureFolio, Genwi, Glide, GoPublish, HP – MagCloud, ImgZine, iMirius, Mag+, MagCast, Magzter, MAZ, Nxtbook Media, Oomph, Origami Engine, PadCMS, PageSuite, PressMatrix, PressPad, PRSS, PugPig, Realview Digital, Red Foundry, Scoopkit, Tablet Publisher Pro, TapEdition, Twixl, Type Engine, WoodWing, Woopi, and ZMags.
The information contained in the Guide comes from surveys completed by the companies themselves, along with materials submitted or found online.
A new website has been launched to support the app at www.tabletpublishingmag.com.
The app was intended to be launch under a new Apple developer account for TNM Digital Media LLC, but a mistake by Apple’s developer support team led it to be launched under a personal account name. (More on this, and the origins of the app, in the follow-up articles linked to this post.)
The magazine features a profile of Joe Zeff, the founder of Joe Zeff Design. JZD is the company behind many innovative apps such as Above & Beyond: George Steinmetz and the Fast Company tablet edition. There is also an interview with the team at Bonnier behind the new digital magazine Imaging Edge, a collaboration between Popular Photography and Sony Camera.
Former Zinio marketing manager, Jeanniey Mullen, contributed an article on how to reengage the unengaged subscriber, while the publisher of Thin Reads, Howard Polskin, writes about the new eBook singles publishing efforts being conducted by major magazine publishing companies.
Eric John, from the Alliance for Audited Media, makes the case in an article for why digital magazines and advertising metrics need a third party audit. “With so much confusion in the market, the need for validated tablet media metrics is real. And one way to advance adoption of these metrics is a third-party audit,” writes John.
Overall, the issue is nearly 200 pages in length, and whether there will be an update of this issue, or more issues, will depend entirely on the reaction of readers, the authors, and the companies involved in the project. But more importantly will be whether readers choose to plunk down $3.99 (£2.49 / 3,59 €) for the single issue app.
