Eric Bates, former executive editor at Rolling Stone, joins NewCo
Bates joins Glenn Greenwald news start-up, backed by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar
The news start-up that will be run by former Guardian and Salon.com journalist Glenn Greenwald landed a new staffer: Eric Bates. Bates will be leaving his post as executive editor of Rolling Stone, Pierre Omidyar announced today. Omidyar, a founder of eBay, is backing the new venture with significant cash.
“I’m pleased to announce that Eric Bates is joining the NewCo team,” Omidyar said today. “Eric will be instrumental in helping us define our editorial strategy for a general-interest audience as well as the editing infrastructure we will need to support our independent journalists.”
Bates had been at Rolling Stone since 2003, but was laid off in January of this year. Prior to Rolling Stone, Bates was an investigative editor at Mother Jones and editor in chief of Southern Exposure, a political journal.
