The issue of getting compelling, relevant video content is a challenge for media outlets that have been predominantly print in the past. In the digital world, everyone is a broadcaster, even if they don’t know it.

I once asked a magazine publisher about their broadcast strategy – just to see their reaction, of course. Once I received the initial blank stare I said that they should use their iPhone one day to stream their magazine’s website to their TV to take a look. Do they have anything to offer other than the usual reprinted press releases? (Later I heard the same guy talking to someone about me, what an idiot I am to think magazine publishers would be interested in video!)

More than three years ago, in one of the very first interviews conducted for TNM, I spoke to Jeff Price, the just hired new publisher for the Sporting News. Price told me that they were going to work with CineSport to solve the very real issue of a sports publication moving to digital media, but without video content. How do you compete with ESPN without video? was the obvious question. (By the way, you can read that old interview, with updates, of course, in the upcoming eBook Talking Digital, to be published later this month.)

Now the Canadian publisher Postmedia Network, the publisher of the National Post, Calgary Herald and other newspapers, has signed an agreement with SendtoNews, a company with studios in Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, San Francisco, New York and London.

Here is the press release:
