Future’s tab-only magazine launch Photography Week adds iPhone support

Future plc’s tablet-only magazine launch, Photography Week, is tablet-only no more. The Newsstand app was originally released in November (see original TNM post here) and originally had a few technical hiccups, but readers who have not had these issues have been very positive about the digital-only magazine.

PW_iPhone4-lgToday Future issued an update that brings the title to iPhone and iPod touch owners.

While the app description screenshots seem to suggest that the app supports the smaller screens of older iPhones, this is not the case. The app looks just fine on the iPhone 5. In fact, I find that the app’s library is very well designed. The bottom navigation of the app features the store, the library of existing issues, and a “More from us” section where Future is promoting its other magazine titles. Obviously, it will be important for the other magazines to offer iPhone versions – there are currently 68 magazines that do.

Future is using its own digital publishing platform to create its apps, called FutureFolio. The platform is able to create attract natively designed digital editions. But is also able to create replica editions, and many of Future’s titles, even Mac|Life, that once had an innovative native app, have opted to do replicas.
