Patch, Al Jazeera English Magazine, The Economist and AP update iOS apps

Patch-app-icon-smThe local online news division of AOL, Patch, has been pretty quiet lately. Maybe AOL likes it like that as the start-up has cost AOL a lot of capital – somewhere north of $200 million to date.

This week AOL’s patch division updated its iPhone app, simply called Patch. The mobile app has always been a good, serviceable news app and the update only improves things more.

The update brings in some design changes and new content, as well as some functional changes for photo uploading.

Aljazeera-iPhone5-smAl Jazeera English Magazine has been updated to add iPhone 5 support.

The tablet-only magazine has been received very positively by readers so far. Of 680 ratings in the iTunes store 591 are 5-star ratings with several of the negative ratings referring to the lack of iPhone 5 support – something that was corrected with the update.

The Economist for iPad was updated earlier this week. The big change is that the tablet version will now feature more retina-quality photographs throughout the app. The update also adds a push notification to inform readers when there is a new update available in the app store.

Finally, the AP has updated its universal iOS app. According to the app description, the app has been suffering outages as of late and the update is supposed to have corrected this.

Unfortunately, the new reviews inside the app store are pretty much a disaster with a majority of new reviews saying the regret updating the app on their devices.
